In early June, Navitas English youth clients presented to the Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network NSW (MYAN) quarterly meeting on their participation in an AMEP Innovations project called REACH.

The meeting focused on how service providers such as Navitas English, the City of Sydney, and SCARF have supported refugee and migrant youth during the COVID-19 pandemic and how programs have adapted to meet their needs.

Marianne Aliperti, the Employment Mentor for REACH, provided an overview of the project and the challenges it faced when the pandemic hit and students were unable to begin their work placements. Three REACH students, Alessandro (Alex), Sadia, and Bashir then presented on their achievements during the project, their disappointment when the work placements could not go ahead as planned, and their sense of personal accomplishment in completing an online internship as a substitute for this experience.

The presentation itself provided the students with their first opportunity to present to a large audience of over forty people online via zoom and showcased their newly developed digital literacy skills. MYAN were thrilled to hear directly from youth in our community and provided students with certificates of appreciation and gift vouchers.

All students spoke very positively about the level of support they received to complete their REACH classes and the virtual internships. Regular individual mentoring meetings were scheduled throughout the project and there were also less formal group meetings and calls focused on well-being and resilience.

By the end of the course, all students felt more confident to present themselves to employers and communicate their strengths and newly acquired employability skills in neatly crafted ‘elevator pitches’.
