What is an AMEP Volunteer Tutor?

As a Volunteer Tutor, you will assist newly arrived adult migrants and refugees, 18 and over, to learn the basics of the English language to help them settle in Australia.

Anyone can become a Volunteer Tutor, even if you’re not a native English speaker. All you need is confidence in English, access to transport and the desire to help others learn.

Why volunteer as an AMEP tutor?

Being a Volunteer Tutor is an extraordinary volunteer experience. You will help non-English speaking migrants who are unable to attend the AMEP English classes or who need additional learning support. It is also a great way to increase your practical experience.

How do I become an English Volunteer Tutor for the AMEP?

We provide:

  • Free training to prepare you for your role as a Volunteer Tutor
  • Interactive training workshops with a qualified teacher
  • The Volunteer Tutor Scheme provides ongoing support and resources for you.
On successful completion, you will be matched with a student by gender and locality.

What is the time commitment?

You will be providing one to two hours per week of English language tuition for adult migrants or refugees who are eligible for the AMEP.
